Downwell’s development began around March 2014. Fumoto had graduated in opera singing but didn’t feel compelled to follow it as a career path. After reading Rami Ismail‘s article “Game A Week: Getting Experienced At Failure”on Gamasutra, Fumoto cancelled further music studies and instead went on to make multiple “game-a-week” projects. Downwell was his thirteenth project, and the one in which he saw the most potential.
Fumoto announced in January 2018 that had started working for Nintendo, saying “I’ll do my best”. It is believed that his success with Downwell was a large factor in his hiring.
